Spiderman Comic Soars at Bonhams & Goodman Collectables Auction

Published December 16th, 2008

A rare 1962 comic which originally retailed for 12 US cents has weaved a web of success at a Bonhams & Goodman Collectables auction, selling for over $5,000. Six bidders, including three telephone bidders, fought it out before the comic was knocked down to the successful buyer for $5,160 (including buyer’s premium), against an estimate of $1,200 – 1,800.

The Marvel Comic Group’s Amazing Fantasy No. 15 is considered to be the holy grail of comics for collectors as it heralds the arrival of Spiderman, who was to become Marvel Comics most popular superhero of all time. This issue was due to be the final issue of Amazing Fantasy due to poor sales, however the arrival of Spiderman saw circulation go through the roof and breathed new life into the series.

Bonhams & Goodman National Head of Collectable Giles Moon said, ‘I am thrilled with the result. We had a lot of interest prior to the sale and the result is a testament to the rarity and historical value of this comic and the continued strength of the comic collecting market.’

Bonhams and Goodman is currently inviting entries for its next Collectables auction, to be held in April.
