Japan midget submarine steering wheel for auction

A World War II steering whee from Japan’s midget submarine raid in Sydney Harbour is expected to fetch tens of thousands of dollars at auction on Sunday.

The steering wheel from a Japanese submarine which made a raid on May 31, 1942, goes for auction at Sydney auction house Lawsons.

“It’s very much an unknown. It wouldn’t surprise me if it reaches $100,000,” said Lawsons spokesman Martin Farrah.

“There is no precedent. Nothing like this has gone to auction before.”

The Japanese embassy and the Australian War Memorial declined to buy the wheel, but Mr Farrah said the War Memorial had confirmed its authenticity.

It is estimated to fetch between $10,000 and $20,000.
