Bonhams & Goodman Collectors Cars & Bikes – Sunday 1 July at 12noon, Sydney

Published June 6th, 2007

On 1 July 2007, Bonhams & Goodman will again offer an outstanding selection of some of the finest Collectors’ Cars & Bikes seen on the market. With impeccable provenance in common, each example looks set to attract a great deal of interest.

An Australian delivered 1934 Packard Standard Eight Victoria Convertible with coachwork by Dietrich is a rare car in its own right – the example on offer, with estimates of $230,000-290,000 is in superb condition and has been in the same family for some 44 years. The vendor’s father, a motor mechanic, purchased the car by pure chance when it came in for a routine service. He had known the car as an apprentice motor mechanic many years earlier and had fallen in love with it.

Vauxhall 30-98s have, quite rightly, increased in value immeasurably over the past 18 months and look set to keep rising. “This is the most delightful car I have consigned in Australia so far and the most original example I have ever seen,” says Robert Glover, National Head of Collectors’ Cars at Bonhams & Goodman. “I will be buying lottery tickets on a weekly basis in a last ditch attempt to buy it”, jokes Glover for whom it is a personal favourite. The car, with estimates of $190,000-260,000 was purchased by the current owner in 1953 from a gentleman on a London Street. The previous owner had the car since 1928, so it is believed to have had three owners from new and has covered less than 20,000 miles since 1928. The front axle has been replaced with a correct E-type 30-98 axle from another car and the front seats were re-trimmed some 40 years ago. Otherwise the car is totally original and can genuinely carry the title of being in ‘time-warp’ condition.
