Published April 11th, 2007

Bonhams & Goodman conducted their first Fine Jewellery Auction for 2007 on Wednesday 4 April in Sydney in a packed saleroom. It proved to be the most successful ‘first for the year’ jewellery auction to date with some extraordinary prices achieved.

Over 250 lots of antique and contemporary jewellery were offered and many of the lots sold above expectation. The catalogue cover lot, an all-platinum three stone diamond ring, the centre 5.01ct H/VS1 oval diamond set between oval diamonds weighing 1.01ct each H/VS1, attracted a lot of interest in the lead up to the sale and sold to a private bidder for $134,400 including buyer’s premium. Lot 78, a fine 2.07ct brilliant cut diamond ring sold for $36,000. Lot 74 an 8.3ct brilliant cut diamond sold for $75,600 and lot 68, an important 18ct white gold tanzanite and pink diamond cluster dress ring fetched $25,620.

Of the many good quality watches offered, lot 125 a Frank Muller 18ct gold, ‘Geneve, Havana’ chronograph wrist watch sold for $10,200 and lot 128, a rare Brietling limited edition 18ct gold wrist watch fetched $8,100.

Gary Draper, National Head of Jewellery, commented, “The market is very strong if you have the right product. To gross over one million dollars in the first jewellery sale of the year is an extraordinary result.”

The Sydney auction sets the tone for the Melbourne Fine Jewellery Auction on Sunday 22 April where over 200 different lots will be offered.
