eBay and Paypal trial anti-fraud security device

Published March 20th, 2007

Up to 30,000 Australian members of payments website PayPal and auction site eBay will be able to trial security keys for their accounts.

The online security keys, or “key fobs”, are being trailed for two months in Australia, Germany and the US. The devices generate a number that must be typed into accounts to verify access and transactions.

As reported in The Sydney Morning Herald on Monday, the keys should make it more difficult for hackers to hijack eBay accounts.

There are 30,000 of the devices available to members of either website – PayPal.com is owned by eBay – with each security device costing users $7.50.
