On eBay, more than 2,000 Irwin-related items were listed for auction. Copies of newspapers carrying front-page tributes were selling at 40 times their cover price, Australia’s AAP news agency reported.
A short-sleeved khaki shirt signed by the star of the Crocodile Hunter series of nature documentaries was priced at 6,000 Australian dollars (4,500 US dollars).
The environmental campaigner died Monday when a barb from a stingray pierced his heart during an underwater filming sequence on the Great Barrier Reef.
Queensland University of Technology lecturer Joanne Jacobs said the sellers of the Irwin items could either be seen as opportunists or entrepreneurs.
