Penfolds wine auction at Langton’s

Published August 12th, 2006

Australian wine auctioneers Langton’s are holding the sale, which began on 7
August and closes August 21.

The Classic Penfolds Auction is offering 1,130 lots online, mainly of single
bottles, including every vintage of Grange from the experimental 1951 to 2001,
as well as large format bottles from all Penfolds ranges.

Last year, a bottle of the 1951 vintage of what was then called Grange Hermitage
went for just over AUS$42,000 (£16,830). Only 160 cases were made and the wine
was never sold commercially.

The current bid for this year’s 1951 bottle is £10,000 (estimate is
£14,000-17,600).

The auction also includes rare bottles of 2004 Bin 42 Cabernet Sauvignon and
imperials (eight standard bottles) of 2004 Bin 60A Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon
Kalimna Shiraz, both offered for the first time ‘en primeur’ for delivery in
2007.
