Record price for kelpie working dog

Published June 12th, 2006

A 20-month-old kelpie has fetched $5400 at a Victorian auction in what organisers believe is a world record sale for a fully trained working dog.

The kelpie’s sale price smashed the previous highest bid of $5000 at last year’s Casterton Landmark Working Dog Auction, a figure believed by organisers to be the standing world record.

A committee member for the Casterton Kelpie Association, Sara Smith, said she was excited an apparent record was set

“It was a world record,” she said. “As far as we know, the record was set last year at our auction and until now it has not been broken.”

The 20-month-old male kelpie, Bagalla Mick, sold at the auction yesterday, will be put to work at a Tasmanian property in the high country just out of Launceston.
