Williams Landscape fetches $1.987 million

Published April 10th, 2006

An Australian landscape painting has sold for almost $2 million as auction house Christie’s draws the curtain on its local operations.

Fred Williams’ Upwey Landscape soared beyond its expected price of $800,000 to a final $1.987 million.

Christie’s said the sale price was the second highest paid for a work of Australian art at auction, and the highest for a 20th century Australian work.

The 1965 painting was the showpiece of today’s auction, but the benchmark price it fetched could be short lived.

Sotheby’s will tomorrow auction John Brack’s 1954 work, The Bar, which is expected to sell for more than $2 million.
